What is Rigevidon?

Rigevidon is a combined contraceptive pill which contains two low-dose synthetic analogues of the female sex hormones; oestrogen and progesterone.

Aside from being primarily used as a contraceptive, Rigevidon is also recommended in women who suffer from heavy, painful or irregular periods.

Rigevidon comes as film coated tablets available in calendar marked packs with 21 tablets in each strip. Each pack contains 1 or 3 strips of Rigevidon pills.

How do Rigevidon works?

Rigevidon is a hormonal combination pill containing two active ingredients, levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol. The ethinylestradiol is a synthetic version of natural female sex hormone oestrogen, and levonorgestrel is of progesterone.

The combination pills like Rigevidon works by overriding the natural monthly cycle in women. Rigevidon stops the ovaries from releasing an egg every month, as per the menstrual cycle. The tablet also thickens the lining of mucus at the neck of ovaries, making it difficult for sperm to reach the womb and fertilise the egg. Rigevidon also thins the lining of the womb and makes it difficult for any fertilised egg to implant in the uterus.

These combined effects greatly reduce your chance of becoming pregnant.

How to take Rigevidon?

Rigevidon tablets come in a blister pack, and each pill is labelled individually with a weekday name. Take a note of the day that you start taking the pill and continue to take it regularly for the next 21 days.

It is important to take the pill at the same time every day. If you have trouble remembering to take your medicine, consider putting an alarm on your phone or keeping your medicine somewhere you’ll remember to take it.

After taking Rigevidon regularly for three weeks, there will be a pill-free seven days. In these 7 days, you should experience your regular period. Start a new tablet strip on the 8th day after you experience you period even if you are still bleeding.

As long as you are regularly taking the tablets without missing any, you can start the new tablet strip on the same day of the week and start your menstrual cycle on the same day of the month.

If you are not using any hormonal contraceptive before, start taking a pill from the first day of your periods.

In case you are switching from another hormonal pill, start taking Rigevidon on the day after you have finished your previous hormonal pill.

If you are switching your contraceptive method – whether you are switching from another combined contraceptive pill or a mini pill – it is advisable to speak to your doctor first.

Side effects and cautions of Rigevidon

All medicines carry the risk of side effects, though not everybody experiences them. Before taking any medicine, it’s important to be aware of the associated risks and to remain vigilant of any side effects or changes which may occur during your course of treatment.

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

• Abdominal pain
• Abnormality of the cervix (change in cervical ectopion) and vaginal secretion
• Acne
• Breast pain, breast enlargement
• Change in sex drive
• Dizziness
• Fluid retention (oedema)
• Irregular, none or reduced bleeding
• Mood swings (including depression)
• Nausea
• Nervousness
• Painful menstruation
• Vaginal infections
• Vomiting
• Weight changes

Allergic reaction

Do not take Rigevidon if you are allergic to levonorgestrel, ethinylestradiol or any of the other ingredients of Rigevidon listed in the patient information leaflet.

If you experience the signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking Rigevidon and seek immediate medical attention.

Signs of allergic reaction include:

• Difficulty breathing or wheezing
• Dry, red and cracked skin
• Itchy, red, watery eyes
• Raised, itchy, red rash (hives)
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
• Tightness of the chest
• Tummy pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant in the near future or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before taking Rigevidon.

If you become pregnant while taking Rigevidon, stop taking the contraceptive pill and inform your doctor.

What if I forget to take Rigevidon?

If you have missed the pill for less than 12 hours and take it within this time, you are still protected against pregnancy.

If you do not remember to take the pill for more than 12 hours, the contraceptive protection of Rigevidon may reduce. The more pills you miss, the higher are chances of an unwanted pregnancy. Take the tablet as soon as you remember, which may mean taking two pills in a day.

What should I do if I take too much of Rigevidon?

There are no side effects reported because of accidentally taking one or two pills of Rigevidon. But, if you feel any distress, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Rigevidon?

While it is unlikely that alcohol consumption will impact the effectiveness of Rigevidon, excessive alcohol consumption may exacerbate side effects, such as nausea or dizziness, or induce vomiting, which can reduce the contraceptive effect of Rigevidon.

Avoid or limit your alcohol consumption while taking Rigevidon.

Will Rigevidon affect my ability to drive or operate a machine?

While it is unlikely that Rigevidon will affect your ability to drive or operate machinery, dizziness is a reported side effect. If you experience dizziness, fatigue or any other side effect which may affect your ability to concentrate, avoid driving or operating machinery until you feel it is safe for you to do so.
