What is Utrogestan?
Utrogestan is a brand of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for the menopause. It is used to relieve symptoms of the menopause in women who have not undergone a hysterectomy (partial or entire removal of the womb/uterus).
When taking an oestrogen-based HRT, the levels of oestrogen can reach levels which surpass the baseline. This causes the endometrium (the lining of the womb) to grow uncontrollably, which increases the risk of endometrial cancer.
Progesterone HRT – such as Utrogestan – should be used in conjunction with an oestrogen-based HRT to oppose its action.
A progestin, such as Utrogestan, is introduced to shed the endometrium and reduce the risk of cancer developing inside the womb.
Together, oestrogen and a progestin make up a combined hormone replacement therapy. They work in synergy to raise the levels of the hormones which taper off throughout the menopause, reducing the symptoms and improving a woman’s quality of life.
What is menopause?
A woman’s body undergoes a number of hormonal changes during the menopause.
The natural sex hormones, known as oestrogen and progesterone, dwindle, slowly inhibiting ovulation and the shedding of the endometrium (the lining of the womb).
This can cause a number of other symptoms, including:
- Difficulty concentrating
- Difficulty sleeping
- Headaches
- Hot flushes
- Joint pain
- Mood swings
- Night sweats
- Palpitations
- Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Reduced muscle mass
- Reduced sex drive
- Vaginal dryness
For some women, these symptoms can be severe and have a drastic impact on their lifestyle and general well-being. Under these circumstances, a doctor can prescribe an HRT treatment to relieve the menopausal symptoms and improve a woman’s quality of life.
How to take Utrogestan?
Take two 100 mg capsules once daily for 12 days from day 15 to 26 of each 28-day cycle of oestrogen.
Utrogestan should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Take Utrogestan without food.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.
Do not take more Utrogestan to make up for a missed dose.
If you take more Utrogestan than you should, talk to your doctor or go to a hospital. Take the medicine pack with you. You may experience dizziness, fatigue or painful periods.
