What is Kliofem?
Kliofem is a continuous, combined hormone replacement therapy treatment (HRT) for postmenopausal women. It contains two synthetic hormones called estradiol and norethisterone, which are similar to the natural sex hormone oestrogen and progesterone, respectively.
Together, the synthetic hormones counteract the symptoms of the menopause.
The estradiol supplements the falling levels of the hormone oestrogen, while the norethisterone counteracts the effect of the estradiol, preventing the endometrium from growing excessively.
What is the menopause?
The menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her body stops preparing itself for pregnancy. Menstruation cycles and ovulation, which both slow down before stopping completely.
During the menopause, oestrogen levels in the body fall, which cause a number of symptoms such as:
- Difficulty sleeping
- Hot flushes
- Lower sex drive (libido)
- Mood swings
- Night Sweats
- Vaginal dryness
Typically, these symptoms begin between the ages of 45 and 55, with many women experiencing symptoms around the age of 51, according to the NHS.
If a woman particularly suffers from these symptoms, HRT can be prescribed to balance the hormones in the body.
