About Microgynon
Microgynon is a combined hormonal contraceptive containing the progestogen, levonorgestrel and the oestrogen, ethinylestradiol.
It is one of the most reliable, reversible and safe oral contraceptives available. It is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. Microgynon does not prevent STI’s such as Chlamydia or HIV.
How does it work?
Microgynon works by stopping ovulation and increases fluid viscosity in the cervix, decreasing the motility of sperm cells, mitigating fertilisation. It also prevents the thickening of the uterus lining which is required for a fertilised egg to grow.
It has the added benefit of relieving period pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.
How to take Microgynon
The pill is taken Once a day for 21 days, preferably at the same time each day. This is followed by a 7-day pill free period. During the pill free period you will experience a lighter and less painful menstrual bleed. A new 21-day tablet cycle is started after the 7-day pill free period.
If you do not experience bleeding during the pill free period, you must ensure you are not pregnant before starting the next tablet cycle.
